an intersxting argument. It goes back to the relationship between abandonment and gentrification in the 60’s and 70’s, discussed in my piece in Neil Smith’s edited volume, “Gentrification, Abandonment, and Displacement: Connections, Causes, and Policy Responses in New York City,” in Smith, Neil, and Peter Williams, eds. 1986. Gentrification and the City. There is a cyclical relationship between investment and disinvestment abandonment at the extreme), but there’s also a long term impetus for gentrification resulting from globalization and the growing role of the financial sector., which the paper might want to deal with also. There are already indications that speculators are buying up inner-city properties with a view to a turn-around and a resurgence of gentrification. It might be an appropriate opportunity for community groups to push for turning bargains into affordable housing instead.
